Happy Mother’s Day

15052017-2On this Mother’s Day please spare a thought for stray dog mother’s and their babies, born into a world that doesn’t want them.  Romania is full of pregnant strays or dogs with puppies as a legacy that dates back to Ceaușescu’s days when people were moved into large city apartment blocks but were not allowed to take their pets with them and subsequently dumped them on the streets.  This coupled with a tradition of not neutering dogs has led to a huge problem with thousands of strays roaming the streets.  Each year sees more and more puppies born to strays, on the streets or in public shelters, further compounding the problem.

This is why the work we do, in running regular sterilation programmes is so critical.  The only way to reduce the number of mums is to get the strays neutered.  It costs around €20 to get one dog neutered – not much per se but when you factor in the hundreds of dogs we need to sterlise you begin to realise the financial burden we face.  It is however the only real long term solution to the stray dog problem in Romania so whenever we can we fund to get dogs neutered.    The other activity we do to try to change the local norm is to educate people, for example through our work with the local school and in partnership with our local vets.

For the mums that did not get neutered in time we try to help both them and their puppies.  The death rate for puppies in the public shelter is normally around 90% as they die of disease, starvation and through attacks from adult dogs.  Thanks to generous donations we have in the past been able to build special puppy enclosures and provide these young lives with better safety through food and vaccinations.  Sadly there are just too many for us to help them all but whenever we have funds we do what we can.

15052017-3

A few lucky mums make it to our Sanctuary of Hope, where they can be safe with their babies and where their babies can run and play and grow up without all the fear, trauma and danger in the public shelter.  Sadly our space is limited and we now have such huge debts (close to €10,000) that we can no longer help anymore mums with their puppies until we get more funds.  In fact our plans to build more kennels at the sanctuary have had to be put on hold as we needed to take the materials purchased for this to the main public shelter to build urgently needed kennels there.  We hope that as we get more funds in to start to pay off our debt we can revisit building our more kennels at the sanctuary and thereby help some more mums with their puppies.

And so on this day where in many countries we celebrate Mother’s Day we ask that you spare a thought and a penny for all the stray canine mums in our care, at the public shelter and on the streets of Romania.  If you can please make a donation to help a mum and her puppies and give those new young lives a better chance of life, and help us to get more mums neutered and stop the tied of puppies.  Every little helps and you can donate through paypal at hopeforstrays.paypal@gmail.com.  Or perhaps you could help one particular mum or her pup and offer them a home?  Every dog that gets adopted out of our sanctuary frees up a space for another dog to be rescued so please if you can home a dog, or know someone who could, please contact us via email at hopeforstrays@yahoo.com.  Thank you and happy Mother’s Day!

Little help can make big things possible!

From the very first days of spring we started the big plans for making a little easier somehow the life of our dogs in sanctuary and public shelter. As you all know by now big plans cannot be realized only with big hopes and big results in rescue are only possible with big amounts of money spent for everything needed daily to help our dogs : daily food for all dogs and cats in our care, daily veterinary care for all souls that cannot survive without proper medical care ( vaccination, castration, medical care for sick or wounded dogs ), maintenance/construction of kennels/doghouses

We are forever grateful to all the amazing friends and donors that make our daily work possible but the sad reality is that situation of romanian strays it is not getting better, more and more souls are abandoned daily , from small newborns who have no real chance to survive without their mom to sad oldies that are left behind without no mercy by those who should offer them protection and love .

We need  help for making possible more sterilisations , more adoptions, more vaccinations, more kennels, more doghouses , more improvments for making their life easier while they are forced to live in locked kennels for being away from the street.

As an answer to your questions I have to say that at the moment our dogs are promoted for adoption trough german/austrian/swiss partners and volunteers who made possible their presence in german photo gallery. We only have few happy tails adopted in UK trough trustful friends that helped us save them out but without the support of a legal founded organization that can help us with homechecks/ contracts/post adoption controls, we cannot  promote our dogs in UK in a better and safe way, we apologise for that.

With over 300 dogs in care at the sanctuary and other hundreds of dogs cared in public shelter, our time online is limited to minimum and that is why we cannot keep up with our blog activity but we are more than happy to receive your help and messages, thank you so much for your trust and care.

Big thank you to all beautiful people that donated for our dogs helped us start the new season with new castration campaigns , new vaccinations campaign in both shelters, new builded kennels, new doghouses, new materials , new castration campaigns and of course new rescued/adopted souls!

Be my Valentine!

pizap-com14867248511831It is that time of year again when we are inundated with love and hearts, and those of us lucky to be in a relationship may look forward to romantic dinner and gifts.  For our cats and dogs in the Sanctuary however it will be just another normal day, a day of dreaming for a forever family and love.  In our Sanctuary we now have over 60 rescue cats, many of whom with medical conditions, and all of them desperate for their own home and their own “Valentine”.

We would like to use Valentine’s day to share some of the love that is going around with these cats.  We would invite you to become one of our cat’s “Valentine” and donate towards a “Valentine’s dinner” for one (or more!) of our kitties.  Through this fundraising drive we hope to raise enough funds not only to cover the cost of food for the kitties for the day but also help cover some other, exciting, costs that we have.

cats

Our exciting Valentine’s news is that 15 of our cats have been offered places in Germany!  However for these lucky ones we need to cover the cost of travel which is €100 per cat (preparation + transport).  This is a large sum of  money for a small charity like ourselves so we really need your support in helping pay for these cats to go to a better life in Germany, and subsequently free up space for other cats at the sanctuary.

So if you would like to do something good for Valentine’s why not offer to become one of our cats Valentine and donate towards them?  All we are asking for is €10 per cat and in exchange we will send you your very own “Valentine’s ecard” to say thank you.  You can help support our cats through donating via paypal: hopeforstrays.paypal@gmail.com and quote “Valentine’s Kitty”.

2017 – New Year of Hope

Dear wonderful friends,

We were offline here for some months but from now on we will try everything possible to be active and to bring updates about our work in benefit of all dogs and cats in our care, hundreds of souls depending on us daily for being able to survive in Romania

As you most probably know by now our dream to find and create a special place for medical cases and special dogs/cats in need became real, from Mai 2016 we opened the gates at our Sanctuary of Hope , a place where we have now in care over 200 dogs rescued from public shelter and street, more than half being at first medical cases in our custody.

Knowing that we started from 0 in 2012 when we founded the orga i am totally proud and happy to say that we entered in 2017, the 5th year of Hope for Romanian Strays, with a big wonderful support team here in Romania but especially out there in the world, where beautiful friends work hard daily to make possible rescue of our dogs/cats, daily food and veterinary care for all the souls in our care.

In 2017, trough our wonderful partners and donors, we will  continue the weekly sterilisation campaigns in comunity and public shelter, we will struggle further for the  adoption of the poor souls in our care and we won’t give up on our social/educational projects .

Thank you for believing in us, thank you for making our work possible, thank you for going further with us in this difficult mission!

Yours with love and gratitude,

Aniela Ghita – Founder of Hope for Romanian Strays Ngo.
