Hope for Romanian Strays

Romania is not a country where you wish to be re-born as a dog. Dogs are mostly considered vermin or used as animals that protect your yard on a chain. Since 2013 killings are legal again in Romania, and since then dogs are chased, hunted and killed everywhere. Abandoning unwanted dogs in the forest or along the streets is common. Dogs as pets are not usual.

But in all that darkness there is light. People like Aniela Ghita, who spend their life for the animals in need. Mostly dogs, but also cats. It makes me happy to see the commitment that she and her organization put into the street animal rescue.

But the view is much wider than taking them off the streets. Rescue means not only collecting the animals from the streets and out of shelters, but also preparing and sending them to a better future in western Europe. Vaccination and sterilization are important parts of that campaign – not only in the private shelter but also offered to peasants and private owners, to sterilize their dogs – so the population is reduced. Recently, they started adoption days, where Romanians can adopt dogs from the shelter, a completely new and unusual approach to get dogs out of the shelter.

It is that comprehensive approach that makes „Hope for Romanian Strays“ work so valuable. The organization is funded by private donors from mostly Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and organizations like their main sponsor from Germany, ProDog Romania e.V. Also smaller foreign organizations like Tierhilfe Lebenswert e.V. support Aniela’s work for the strays.

Thanks, Aniela,  for all you do for those who cannot care for themselves – the dogs and cats of Ploiesti, Romania.

07/08 July – “Take me Home” Adoption Event

After 6 years as active volunteers in public shelter we are still trying to figure out what we should do better for being able to stop the terrible bad phenomenon of abandon , how we can become more visible to the locals here to make them understand somehow that life in shelter it shouldn’t be an option for a soul to whom they  promised a good life in their family

20180707_135435

After the positive outcome of our adoption outdoor events in summer of 2017, our very first Adoption Event for 2018 was scheduled in the same time with the International Canine Expo hosted by the city hall, 07-08 July 2018.

We started with big hopes and with a bunch of abandoned babies, lovely young souls dumped in public shelter between 04-06 July , the selection being made with the thought that last arrived puppies represent the first priority for going out before they risk to be contaminated with parvovirosis or other bad virus , so common in all big groups of puppies.

The numbers are relative since we continue to receive daily new abandoned babies at the shelter but we must say that our adoption event was a total surprise , a very good surprise for us  and our puppies since we were able to make 23 happy adoptions in two days , 20 beautiful families came to the adoption event with a special purpose : to take home with them one puppy from shelter , for being able to save them from a life in kennels! And yes, only 20 families for 23 puppies simply because 3 amazing young  came to adopt one puppy and left home with two , isn’t this great?

After two days out of the shelter with our puppies we are glad to say that we met beautiful people that came at the park especially for our dogs, they came to adopt and those that couldn’t adopt came with food donations and even with money donations for our dogs in shelter ! It is a change, a great change that we could see and feel no that we can compare this adoption event with the very first adoption event organized in July 2017. We are glad to say that we didn’t expected such great results, we didn’t realized so far that so many good people follow our work and want to help !

With the big hope that this is only the beginning of a good summer for our beauties that will be present at the future adoption events , we want to say big thank you to all those people that  came to adopt, to donate, to meet us and we promis that we will be back in few weeks !

Special thank you to the beautiful sponsor Royal Canin for offering us special adoption kits and toys that we could offer as adoption gift to adopted babies in first day , we are glad to say that the number of adoption was much biger than the number of kits simply because we didn’t expected so many good people at our event , that is why many babies left home with toys offered as a gift by our beautiful donors from Germany !

Forever grateful and always proud to be able to work with the great team from Prodog Romania e.V, Germany, the team that makes possible rescue of so many dogs from public shelter , the team that does everything possible for the shelter dogs here on the ground, the team who offered to every single puppy adopted this week the great gift of survival: FREE VETERINARY CARE IN THE FIRST YEAR OF LIFE ( free vaccination kit, free medical care if anything goes wrong after their first period in shelter and free castration at proper age )

As we always said it : TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG !

Thank you for all your support, thank you for believing in their chance and thank you for making everything possible to help us go further ! Please remember that you can help us too and your donation is always welcome in any of our official accounts!

Spay and Neuter Campaigns

Hope for Romanian Strays recommends and supports in all possible ways the practice of spay/neutering cats and dogs, as being the only human and legal way to prevent the birth of unwanted kittens and puppies, the only way to reduce the number of abandoned souls in need.

After 6 years of work as volunteers in public shelter we are still fighting against the abandon of unwanted puppies, with or without their mommies, so we are trying our very best to prevent this organising days of castration in public shelter, days of castration in villages and also scheduled castrations in clinics, for dogs and cats with owners.

Spay and neuter permanent campaigns represent the single most important way to reduce the sufference and death of  all unwanted cats and dogs, the only possible sollution for reducing the overpopulation of romanian strays.

Our castration campaigns are sponsored mostly by german organisation ProDog Romania e.V , but also by private donors from Austria, Germany, Finland, Switzerland and UK

The price of a castration goes up to 25 Euro / 30 USD and if you want to become an active part of our work, you can become one of the sponsors we need to sustain further our campaigns

After 6 long years of fight for their survival  we  decided to create a special page dedicated to our spay and neutering campaigns, not because we never did that before but because we need help to make more castrations possible for having less abandoned souls, less sick or dead puppies/kittens in shelter, less victims that never asked to be born in our cruel society.

If you want to help us in our mission please feel free to share and donate a little for making our path easier , only with permanent active support we can succeed
