Be my Valentine!

pizap-com14867248511831It is that time of year again when we are inundated with love and hearts, and those of us lucky to be in a relationship may look forward to romantic dinner and gifts.  For our cats and dogs in the Sanctuary however it will be just another normal day, a day of dreaming for a forever family and love.  In our Sanctuary we now have over 60 rescue cats, many of whom with medical conditions, and all of them desperate for their own home and their own “Valentine”.

We would like to use Valentine’s day to share some of the love that is going around with these cats.  We would invite you to become one of our cat’s “Valentine” and donate towards a “Valentine’s dinner” for one (or more!) of our kitties.  Through this fundraising drive we hope to raise enough funds not only to cover the cost of food for the kitties for the day but also help cover some other, exciting, costs that we have.

Our exciting Valentine’s news is that 15 of our cats have been offered places in Germany!  However for these lucky ones we need to cover the cost of travel which is €100 per cat (preparation + transport).  This is a large sum of  money for a small charity like ourselves so we really need your support in helping pay for these cats to go to a better life in Germany, and subsequently free up space for other cats at the sanctuary.

So if you would like to do something good for Valentine’s why not offer to become one of our cats Valentine and donate towards them?  All we are asking for is €10 per cat and in exchange we will send you your very own “Valentine’s ecard” to say thank you.  You can help support our cats through donating via paypal: hopeforstrays.paypal@gmail.com and quote “Valentine’s Kitty”.

We rescue cats too – Ninja reports

Ninja.jpg

Ninja

It has been quite some time since our stellar guest blogger The Don has done an interview for us but as he is busy napping today we thought we would ask our very own Hope for Romanian Strays rescue Ninja to step in.  Ninja came to us in the summer of 2012, along with over 20 other cats and kittens, and Don very kindly gave his mum permission to adopt her. Ninja now lives in Zurich, Switzerland where she enjoys playing with feathers, snuggling with Don and eating treats.  Today Ninja will be interviewing some of our recently rescued kittens.

Ninja:  Oh cat oh cat I am so excited to be doing my very first interview!!!  I am here today with a little gang of kittens and an awesome mum that Hope for Romanian Strays recently rescued.  Some of these guys were found on the streets and others were dumped at the shelter – the DOG shelter mind you so lots of dangerous dogs and a very dangerous place for little kittens to be dumped.

Ninja:  Okay so I’m going to be talking to Bobby and Ginger who have really kindly agreed to take a break from playing to talk to me about their story.  ….. erm guys?  Time for the interview – we can all have a good play afterwards!

Bobby

Bobby: Sorry!  Come on Ginger stop mucking around!  We have a really important job to do and mum said that if we do this interview it might help us find our very own forever family!

Ninja: Yes – you never know perhaps someone reading this might fall in love with you guys and want to give you a home.

Ginger: Really?!

Ninja: Or at the very least maybe someone who can’t give you a home might want to help

you by sponsoring you so that you can buy new toys and kitten noms and treats.

Ginger:  Oooooh I love toys!!  Can I get some toys?  We don’t have many toys here and mum gets really annoyed when I keep playing with her tail.

Bobby:  But her tail is soooo cool to play with!

Ginger: It is it is!  But I hear there are tons of fun kitten toys out there too.  I’d love to get to play with some of them.

Ninja: Toys are pawesome!  I’m so lucky – I got adopted by an awesome mum and she buys me tons of cool toys and I also get lots of treats too.

So now you guys are just chilling at Hope for Romanian Strays’ Sanctuary at Hope?

Bobby:  Yes. It’s really cool here!  There is room for us to run around and play safely.  On the streets it is hard to play safely because there are so many dangerous things, like big stray dogs, cars and nasty people who want to hurt us.

Ninja: Hurt you?  It’s hard to believe anyone would want to hurt you guys – you are so cute!

Ginger: Yes I know but it’s true!  There are people here in Romania who kill cats and kittens like us – they do horrid things like put us in bags and throw us away like rubbish!!  Fortunately for us Aniela found us and brought us to the Sanctuary of Hope where we are safe.  She is also making sure that we get enough food and that we will get our vaccines.

Bobby:  Hmmm but I don’t like vaccines – they hurt!

Ninja:  But they are also really important.  Without vaccines you could get sick and even die.  Food is also really important for you to grow up big and strong.  When I was a little kitten I did not always have enough food and my mum says that’s why I’m so petite today. Fortunately for me I now get plenty of food which is awesome.

Ginger: That sounds great!  We are getting food here and the Sanctuary is a great place to live but we dream of having our very own forever home too – and of getting more treats.  We would love to have our own human to play and cuddle with.  Do you think any of your readers would like to give us a home?

Ninja:  Maybe – that would be great!  Perhaps someone hearing about your story and seeing how cute you guys are might come forward and give some of you a forever home, perhaps even here in Switzerland like me!

Bobby: Oh my cat that would be a dream!  We’d love to have a forever home all for ourselves somewhere safe outside of Romania.  I do hope someone sees this post and comes forward to adopt us.

Ginger: Me too!!!

Ninja: Me three!  All they would have to do is contact Aniela at hopeforstrays@yahoo.com and she could give them more details about you and how to adopt you.  I will keep my paws crossed for you guys!

Bobby:  Thank you!  We have to go now – it’s time for a little nap and then we’re going to have a little play.  We love playing!

Ginger:  Yes thank you!  Yay let’s go play!!

Our Birthday Auction draws to a close

Picture1As part of our birthday celebrations we organised an online auction to try to raise urgently needed funds.  We asked and received lots of items donated to the auction which was fantastic -without these very kind donations we could not have held the auction at all.  Items ranged from art work to jewelry to toys and included a very exciting donation from Webbox.  For those who do not know Webbox they make the world’s best cat and dog treats (that is the official opinion of our master blogger The Don and his friends) so we were overjoyed when they made the very kind offer. In fact The Don was so excited by this he wanted to be included in this blog!

Interviewer:   So Don can you share your thoughts on the Hope for Romanian Strays fundraising Birthday Auction?

The Don: Mum needs to place another, higher bid on the Webbox.  *Don stares at his mum*

Interviewer:  Erm … right.  Any other thoughts you would like to share?

11911695_10204800627958658_87758914_nThe Don: Yes.  Mum needs to make sure a higher bid gets placed on those handmade little baby booties to make sure they do not end up on my footsies. Or anyone out there *Don stares at our followers*  Please?

Interviewer:  Right. Okay. So any final thoughts?

The Don:  Well yes.  I want to say that there are some really cool items in the auction, some of them still with no bids or very low bids.  I think people need to remember two things:

  1. Every penny from the bids goes to help save stray dogs, and a few kitties, in Romania.  The winter is approaching and this year we are expect a particularly brutal winter for the dogs – there are not enough kennels or food to see them through the winter. So many will die. *Don wipes away a big tear*
  2. Secondly Christmas isn’t that far away peoples!  Why aren’t people using this as a great way to buy some Christmas presents now & avoid the rush in December?!  It’s a double gift really – to whoever you give the item to but also to the dogs you help save.  Simples!

Interviewer:  Great points there Don thank you so much!

Fan from Cordoba – starting bid €12

Leather cat money box. A great Christmas stocking filler. Starting bid €8

And really those are indeed two points that we want you to think about, in particular the first one.  As you know the shelter we support, in Bucov, is well over capacity now, over 700 dogs over to be exact.  There are not enough kennels now to provide shelter from the extreme cold and wet so many dogs face a winter outside in the open air.  These dogs will die as they will also invariably be the weaker dogs who cannot fight for a kennel.  The same will go for food.  The shelter has for a while now not been able to provide sufficient food to feed all the dogs.  We have been helping out thanks to our supporters such as Pro-Dog Romania but with winter approaching we need to keep up feeding the dogs and if at all possible offer them more support to survive the extreme weather.  As it stands we will see very many dogs die a very, very miserable death.  We want to do all we can to reduce that number and save as many as we can.  The money raised during the auction – either through bids or through donations made as a result of the auction PR – will go along way to help.

Don’s other point though is also true!  Christmas is not that far away and there are some lovely potential gifts in the auction.  Why not bid for one and make a particularly special Christmas gift by also saving a dog too!  You still have 1 day left to bid!

kittensAs our auction draws to a close we therefore ask for you to have one last look and place one last bid.  In doing so please think of those dogs that so desperately need your help.  If you do not see an item you like why not bid to help a dog or a cat (one of the auction items) or simply make a donation via paypal to hopeforstrays@yahoo.com.  Remember every cent goes to the animals and even a small amount can make a big difference – €10 for example pays for a puppies vaccination or a bag of food.  So go have a look and show your support for Hope for Romanian Strays and the work we do to bring hope to these poor, abandoned strays.  Thank you.

It’s raining cats and dogs

02.08.15-5I am probably starting to sound like a broken record but sadly things just do not change in Romania. We are yet again overwhelmed – but not just with puppies but also kittens and cats. Just as puppies get dumped at the shelter so do kittens. This is particularly bad for the kittens as the shelter is surrounded by stray dogs and their chances of getting attacked, injured and killed are very high. Fortunately we generally manage to get to them in time. We also rescue kittens we find on the streets or are asked for help from our vet or people in the area.
