Everyday we see dogs in desperate need of help and we can only do so much with our limited funds. It is very difficult but what keeps us going is all the dogs we do manage to rescue and save. This week alone with had 31 dogs that made it to safety and new forever homes in Germany and Switzerland. We have our wonderful supporters and Pro Dog Romania to thank for this great action.
Last month I wrote about Ursa, a poor dog who was so malnourished she could not stand and she had to be carried to safety back in June. She was nothing but skin and bones, with sores where the skin was taught across her bones. She was in a heart wrenching state.
In the our care, despite her emaciated state, she was the most lovely, tail-wagging dog, and despite all she had gone through she trusted us and showed the most amazing character. Thanks to some great support, financially from our supporters, and also from our vet Popescu, she made an amazing recovery.
We now have fantastic news! Ursa has left Romania, and the country where she nearly starved to death, and has traveled to a new home in Germany. You might have thought that she was still too weak to travel, however Ursa has made an amazing transformation. As you can see from the photo Ursa now looks like a new dog! And doesn’t she look happy!
Ursa would not be here today if it were not for Hope for Romanian Strays. There are so many more dogs that need our help so please continue to support us and please continue to share our posts and images. For dogs like Ursa it makes a huge difference.
One of our supporters recently reminded us that it was two years ago that Hope for Romanian Strays was founded. We had been too busy to remember! These have been two emotional years in which we have seen many ups and downs. We have seen far too many dogs who needed urgent help, far too many who we were unable to rescue and far too much misery, cruelty and despair.
Hope for Romanian Strays was founded between 14 and 31 August 2012 by a small group of volunteers who wanted to formally do more for the stray cats and dogs of Ploiesti. The life of the group started on Facebook, where volunteers would post about dogs and cats in need of help or adoption, and share their photos to try to help them. From this small group of a few we have now grown into a fully fledged charity, helping hundreds of animals in Ploiesti in desperate need.
We have had fantastic successes, have rescued and saved so many dogs (and a cats),and have done so much good for the strays in the shelter. We have also had so many Happy Tails which make all the work and effort worth while. Hundreds of dogs are now living wonderful, happy lives with their new forever families outside of Romania and in celebration of our two year anniversary we wanted to share some of their photos, video’s and stories.
We also invite you all, friends of Hope for Romanian Strays, to celebrate with us two years of activity. Join our birthday event on Facebook and share your photos of the happy babies you adopted through us, of let us know which photo you like the most and give us ideas on how we could go further with the charity.

It has been over sixth month’s since we first wrote about Larry – the dog with the unfortunate amputation. We all felt so moved by this lovely chap’s misfortune and we hoped that the blog post would generate more interest in
him. Sadly the first post got very little response, so we wrote another and when that didn’t work we wrote a 3rd post about Larry. This was back in May and despite our best efforts the months continued to tick by with no one showing any interest in this special, unlucky dog.
Now we finally have some fantastic news – Larry will finally be safe! On June 6th he will travel to Tierheim Lingen in Germany where he will be cared for until he finds his forever home. Tierheim Lingen is an animal shelter but unlike the shelters in Romania the dogs are loved and cared for and in no danger of being killed and are far less likely to come in contact with nasty diseases or get injured.
I can’t tell you how happy we are. This is a dog that has had his fair share of bad luck and he is a lovely chap that deserves a chance at life. His journey will not end at the German shelter – he will have one final journey to make to his forever home, but the chapter of his life that was full of pain, suffering and constant danger will now be closed. We still have so many dogs desperate for homes but Larry now will no longer be on our list for those that we want to save from the jaws of death in Romania. Safe travels Larry and good luck with the new chapter in your life. We didn’t quite find you a home for Easter but this was worth the wait!
